Among the martyrdom accounts of the apostles of Jesus for their Christian faith, the one most people have heard of is that Peter was crucified upside down. This supposedly was by his own request, as he felt he was not worthy of dying in the same manner as his Lord Jesus Christ. Despite this being such a common account, most people who repeat it do not apply proper scrutiny to the tradition of Peter’s crucifixion, such as asking about its origin. Is the account accurate? Was Peter even crucified in the first place? The answer to many of these questions is explored in “The Fate of the Apostles,” by Sean McDowell, in chapter 5, which discusses Peter’s martyrdom.
