When I first heard that James Gunn was going to do a Superman movie that would kick off a new DC Universe, I was filled with confidence in this upcoming movie. James Gunn’s prior comic book movies are some of the most true-to-form comic book movies in terms of style, as they are not afraid to embrace the weirder and goofier aspects of comic books. His work on the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is among some of the best of the MCU and comic book movies in general, while his “The Suicide Squad” movie is light-years above the original “Suicide Squad” movie. I expected Superman to be at least good, and I am happy to say Superman is a film that is inspiring, funny, and truly portrays the character of Superman.
The film opens with a wonderful opening text with powerful music playing in the background, explaining the history of this new DC continuity, each with a passage of time with a 3 in it, immediately throwing us into the plot afterwards. This is a possible weakness of the movie; it throws you fast into this world and characters and is rather fast paced for the first 20 minutes of the movie. I do agree that it is fast in the beginning; however, I feel that by the time we get to the Clark and Lois interview scene, we have slowed down enough to be invested in this character, as 10 minutes are dedicated to a purely dialogue-driven scene. It perfectly establishes who Losis is as a reporter, Clark’s kindness and optimism to a fault, and how the two, while dating, are still trying to figure out their relationship. This scene also further shows the talent of David Cornswet as Superman and Rachel Bronshan as Lois Lane, as this scene truly feels like an argument between a struggling couple.
