Superman is the most iconic superhero of all time, rivaling even the likes of Batman and Spiderman, and is the highest-grossing comic book series of all time with over 600 million copies sold. However, despite his widespread fame, how Superman is perceived by the average person who has not read the comics is vastly different from that of the likes of Spider-Man or Batman, who, while having differences in their adaptations, still have people walking away with an accurate idea of who those characters are and what they represent.

Superman is not like this, as there can be a lack of respect for Superman as a character and an idea at times in public consciousness. As with all widespread franchises, whatever is the most mainstream version of the character is going to be what the audience judges Superman by (people who grew up with the animated versions are going to be outliers, but cartoons and comics are not as popular as movies). The two most mainstream movies of Superman are the Richard Donner movies, starring Christopher Reeve as Superman, and Zack Snyder’s Superman movies, featuring Henry Cavill in the role. These movies have left people with two very different interpretations of Superman, which ultimately do not fully line up with what Superman is and represents, which is why how Superman is perceived by the public is muddied.
