There is a connection between theology and film. Film can express ideas from our current culture in an artistic form. This could include not only cultural ideas that might run counter to Theology but also theological themes that can be present in film, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Therefore, I feel that a link between the two can be studied.
On the topic of studying, I do believe that the study of theology does warrant looking at Films. Not only are they a valid art form full of themes, messages, and ideas, but as mentioned before, they can contain Biblical parallels in the work. We can learn much about how the World portrays Biblical themes, Christianity, or concepts in general. This can include the meaning of life, death, and what true happiness is. As Christians, it can be useful to learn how the World’s perspective compares to that of Theology. It will deepen our knowledge and give us a new way to look at these movies through a Godly lens. That is why studying Film for Theology should be done by us.
Finally, I believe that Films are a very valid form of communication in Today’s culture. Film is more than just entertainment for the masses to enjoy. They are a true means for an artist to express a message to the world. This is like how God’s message can be expressed in creation, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”(Romans 1:20). The two concepts have parallels in expressing more than what is initially seen. That is why so many important ideas, whether spiritual or not, can be found through the study of what is being communicated in films. In conclusion, Films are valid art forms that have many relations to Theology, which is why they should be studied to see what is being communicated from them
